Why I keep bouncing off mobile RPGs (and which ones stick)
I want to love mobile RPGs. On paper they're perfect for the format: deep systems, long arcs, something to chip away at over weeks. In practice I start plenty and finish few. The reason is usually the same.
Too many of them front-load menus and grind before giving you a reason to care. On a phone, where sessions are short, that's fatal. If I'm three hours in and can't name a single character's motivation, I'm out. Emberfall Saga is the recent exception; it hooks you with writing early and lets the systems reveal themselves later.
The other killer is battery. A game I'd happily grind on the couch gets shelved when it drains half my charge on a commute. RPGs that offer a lighter graphics mode understand this and win a lot of my playtime for it.
My honest take: the best mobile RPGs treat your time and your battery as limited resources. Give me a reason to keep tapping and a way to do it without a charger nearby, and I'll actually reach the ending.
